Gas Guzzler Rebate Let You Save Money On New Car

If you are planning to buy a new car, you may want to wait until July 23rd. At that time, the government will release the final details of the Car Allowance Rebate System (aka: Gas Guzzler Rebate Program). The program works as follow, if you trade in an eligible car for a new car that is 4 MPG or better, you’ll get $3,500 instant rebate from the dealer. If your new car is 10 MPG or better, you’ll get $4,500 instant rebate.

However, this doesn’t mean you can just walk in to a participating dealership and expect to get the rebate. There are a few things you must do:

  1. Check the official CARS.gov website for more detail.
  2. Make sure your car is eligible
  3. Bring the title, registration and insurance papers showing continuous registration and insurance coverage for the past full year.
  4. When you buy or lease a new vehicle, the dealer handles the submission of all required information to NHTSA.
  5. NHTSA ensures that your purchase meets the requirements.
  6. About 10 days later, NHTSA will issue a financial credit to the dealer — assuming all program requirements have been met.

Lastly, be sure not to let the rebate weaken your negotiation. If the dealer is trying to take advantage of you because you’re trying to use the rebate, report them to NHTSA!
