Interview with Money Help for Christians

About a year and a half ago I listened to a Crown Financial Ministries radio show interview with the author of Free Money Finance. I immediately started following that blog. After about six months of reading the blog I decided to start MH4C. My wife had been encouraging me to “do something useful with all that knowledge”. She’s also told me for years that I need to write. The blog format appealed so I decide to work towards starting my own blog. It was another six months before I finally got some pillar content together. When I first started writing for my blog there was not internet in my neighborhood (we had not had it for over two years). I waited until I was traveling to Canada before I started publishing on the blog. I had planned to travel to other places around town to post my articles, but fortunately by the time I returned home to Papua New Guinea they had internet in my neighborhood.

My blog is a specific niche within the personal finance niche – I target Christians topics. As a church leader for nearly ten years, my ministry experience has had a profound impact on the content of my blog. My blog is a response to many questions regarding Christians and money. In addition, in the blog I like to focus on issues of justice and poverty – specifically third world. I was born and raised overseas. In addition, I am currently living in Papua New Guinea so my overseas experience has dramatically shaped the content.

First, as has already been mentioned, it specifically targets Christian readers. Second, my unique perspective and worldview provide a an environment for a unique look at finances. I have lived in three different countries almost in equal thirds – Papua New Guinea, USA, and Canada. While my readership is mostly Americans and Canadians, I am able to provide a different perspective on many common financial topics. Finally, I have a Masters of Divinity degree. I first learned biblical theology and I am now in the process of trying to apply those lessons to the field of finance. Most other sites are financial guys who are learning the theology – I’m backwards.

I enjoy writing about money as a broader subject. I think there is a lot more to money than managing it on a day to day level. There are deeper motivations and impulses behind every financial decision. Topics that explore those underlining assumptions about money are fun to write.

One of the goals of MH4C is to turn visitors into readers and readers into friends. In two years I hope the MH4C blog will provide a venue of discussion, community, and accountability. The blog is a starting place for several financial related products. For example, just last month I started publishing a free newsletter called MH4C Special Reports. In two years I anticipate having a solid committed readership. Beyond that I’m just enjoying the ride and looking forward to meeting new people through the blog.

I would advise your readers to step back for just a moment and re-evaluate your financial direction. Most of us have learned to be great money managers. We can save and stretch our dollars. We can shop for the best deal, but ultimately many of us have no long term plan for our money. A long term plan is bigger than retirement savings. Its knowing the limitations and the opportunities afforded by money. It involves knowing why you work and what you hope to accomplish with your life and money. If you have no goal or target long term, the New Year is a great time to take a day and decide what do I want to be doing in 20 years? Then ask, what role money will or will not play in that plan.
