When taking Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University course at my church in spring 2009 I started searching for more information and found personal finance blogs. Although overwhelmed with the vast amount of information and insight available I noticed there was a lack of mid-life women in the niche.
This inspired me to share my personal finance story with the focus on preparing for retirement in 10-15 years. Buck$ome Boomer’s Journey to Retirement keeps me focused on reducing debt, saving and doing a good job of managing my finances.
Since I had no experience with blogging there was a big learning curve. If you would have told me a year ago that I would have a blog, be on Twitter and know about widgets and plug-ins I would not have believed it. It’s been a great experience.
Definitely yes! A big part of the time commitment required to blog successfully is reading news, articles and other blogs related to personal finance. One of my favorite things about blogging is learning from and interacting with the personal finance blog community. Money Hacks Network has an important role in this group.
Saving money is my favorite blog topic and one you’ll see often. I’ve written about saving on vacation expenses, groceries, entertainment and so on. Luckily most people like to save money so it’s a good topic to write about frequently.
I like to put the “person” into personal finance. I’m having a hard time even thinking of a single post that did not include my life experience with the subject. This is why you won’t find articles discussing gold, mutual funds and stocks on my blog. I leave these topics to other bloggers with that knowledge and experience.
I’m not sure (there’s probably a way to tell, but I’m still learning) so I’ll tell you about mine. My blogroll is quite large (and I need to add some more favorites) because there are so many personal finance blogs that make me laugh, think and learn. Some do all three at the same time!
The most important thing to remember is that it’s never too late to save for retirement. Some people give up because they haven’t started or are “behind” according to the rules for their age. Just start, even a little, and every penny will make a difference.
