Women have been getting pregnant since the earth began. It seems like a pretty simple process, yet many women still have difficulty. While there are no guarantees, there are several steps you can take to proactively try to get pregnant. These steps are good measures for trying to have a healthy pregnancy as well.
1. Schedule an exam with your OB/GYN to be sure that everything is okay down there. This is especially important if you haven’t had a routine check up in a while. Consider this your pre-conception exam and explain to your doctor that you are trying to get pregnant. This will help him or her more specifically know how to assist you and what to look for.
2. Practice healthy habits. If you are not already a healthy eater, now is the time to start, not only for you but for your partner as well. Try to eat balanced meals, making sure to get plenty of fruits and vegetables. Folic acid and calcium are extra important during this time so you might consider adding supplements. Avoid foods that are high in fat and cholesterol, and definitely cut out any alcohol consumption or drug use.
3. Get moving. Regular exercise is important for overall health but any excess weight that you’re carrying can affect you and your baby with things like gestational diabetes. Plus, women who are active before getting pregnant tend to have fewer complications during pregnancy and delivery and are able to lose weight quicker after giving birth.
4. Kick those bad habits. If you are a smoker, quit now. Try to cut back on caffeine as well. Many antibiotics can also affect pregnancy so discuss all medications with your doctor.
5. Learn your ovulation cycle. You can buy kits that include tools to help you measure your body temperature and cervical fluid to determine ovulation times. These can help you time intercourse so that your body is at its most fertile peaks.
6. Your man has some homework too. He should avoid hot tubs and tight fitting underwear and pants. These can inhibit sperm production. He should also take up your healthy habits of diet and exercise.
7. Check your position. Putting a pillow under your pelvis and staying in that position after sex allows the sperm to travel with gravity. The man should be on top.
8. Relax. Ultimately, you are not in control so don’t let stress and fear overwhelm you.
